About Nagarmotha:
Nagarmotha (Cyperus rotundus), a cosmopolitan weed, is found in all tropical, subtropical and temperate regions of the world. In India, it is commonly known as Nagarmotha and it belongs to the family Cyperacea. An extensive review of the ancient traditional literature and modern research revealed that the drug has numerous therapeutic actions, several of which have been established scientifically, which may help the researchers to set their minds for approaching the utility, efficacy and potency of Nagarmotha.

Chemical Composition:
The major constituents include cineol (+) copadiene, copaene, cyperen I&II, cyperenone, isopatchoulenone, cyperotundone, cyperol, cyperolone, Beta-cyperone, kobusone, mustakone, patchulene and β – sitosterol, essential oils, gurjunene, gcalacorene, flavonoids, terpenoids, sesquiterpenes, cyprotene, aselinene, rotundene, valencene, gurjunene, trans-calamenene, cadalene, cyperotundone, isocyperol, acyperone, etc...
Pharmacology Activity:
Nagarmotha research studies have shown that it possesses various pharmacological activities such as anti-diabetic, anti-diarrheal, stomachic- Antispasmodic activity, stimulant, anti-hyperlipidemic, hepatoprotective, anti-bacterial, analgesic & anti-inflammatory, diuretic, carminative, emmenagogue, anthelminthic, analgesic, hypotensive, antirheumatic activities. Also used in Wound healing activity, Lipid lowering activity, Antiplatelet activity, Antibacterial activity, Anticonvulsant and antioxidant activity, Antimalarial activity, Antimutagenic and radical scavenging activity, and antimicrobial activity.
The essential oil (0.5-0.9%) from the tuber is used in perfumery, soap making, and insect repellent cream and has very effective Ovicidal and larvicidal activity.

Avoid Nagarmotha during constipation; it can make the stomach situation worse. Consult your doctor before taking Nagarmotha during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Excessive consumption of the herb can cause constipation and aggravate Vata doshas.
