Mahua Oil – For external use – Botanical name of mahua is madhuca indica also known as Hippegida, halippe, hippe, heppenara, madhuka, ippa, eppimara, irippa, llippa, lluppa, mhda, mahula, maua, mahua, katiluppai, kattu lluppai ennai, lluppi, ippa puvvu, mahuva, leluppai, mipup, gulechakan, etc.
Mahua oil flowers and seeds are edible. The fruits of the tree are used as vegetables. The seeds of the tree contain 40% pale yellow oil. Mahuwa oil is used as cooking oil by most of the tribes in odisha, chattisgarh and Maharashtra. After the extraction, the residue is used as a fish poison. Bheel tribe of Madhya Pradesh burns this residual substance to keep the snake away. The other use of mahua oil is as hair oil, skincare, vegetable butter, and in making soaps. Mahua flower contains about 65 to 70% sugar cellulose, albuminous substances, ash, enzymes, yeast, and water. Due to its high sugar content, the flowers provide adequate energy for oral administration. In some parts of India, tribal women eat mahua flowers during breastfeeding as a nutritive food. In Bihar, flower pickle is used in tuberculosis. Tribals of Bastar in Chattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, bheel prajati in Madhya Pradesh, and north Maharashtra produce the alcoholic drink of mahua flowers by fermentation. The tribes of Rajasthan use stem bark powder for the treatment of respiratory disorders. Mahua flowers are also used to make jams, jellies, biscuits, and many other food items due to their nutritional value (contain vitamins, sugar, amino acids, organic acids, enzymes, and other compounds).
Medicinal Use:
Mahua tree is an important medicinal tree as well. Mahua flowers are stimulant, demulcent, laxative, anti-helminthic, and cough relieving. The flower is cooled in nature and is used for treating colds, coughs, bronchitis, and other respiratory disorders. Mahua oil is galactogen (stimulating breast milk), Pain relieving, and vomiting-inducing in action. These are used in pneumonia, skin diseases, and piles. The tree bark is astringent and emollient (skin Softening). The bark is used for tonsillitis, gum troubles, diabetes, and ulcers. The leaves of the tree contain alkaloids, carbohydrates, proteins, saponins, tannins, triterpenoids, and the absence of gums and fixed oils. These are traditionally used in the treatment of expectorants and are also used for chronic bronchitis, bronchitis rheumatism, headache, and hemorrhoids. In ayurveda for the preparation of alcoholic fermented drugs (asava and arishta), mahua flowers are used as fermenting agent, Different parts possess liver protection, fever reducing, swelling reducing, pain relieving, anti-tumor, anti-estrogenic (Block the production or utilization of estrogens/ female sex hormones, or inhibits their effects; estrogens is the hormone that produces as an environment suitable for fertilization, implantation, and nutrition of the early embryo), blood pressure lowering, wound healing and anti-pregestational (work against progesterone; progesterone is responsible for preparing and maintaining the uterine environment for fertilized egg) activities.
